I have been greatly blessed by the teaching and friendship of both of John Macarthur & RC Sproul. In other words, both of them became good teachers for me in understanding Reformed Theology and Biblical truth. However, I did not get the opportunity to meet them personally. But their helpful books and teaching videos on YouTube have become very useful for me.
Today I am writing my thoughts about the friendship of John Macarthur & RC Sproul.
John MacArthur and R.C.Sproul had a friendship that was characterized by unity of purpose, standing for reformed theology, and defending the gospel. Both were thought to be rigid in their theology and devoted to preaching and teaching the word of God according to evangelicalism.
This kind of relationship between the two was really healthy one wherein they respected each other's work. They are both interesting characters in that with different focuses in their ministries MacArthur on expository preaching and Sproul on Reformed theology and philosophy, yet they shared a passion for the Word and for the dissemination of sound doctrine to the church.
They often delivered messages for each other’s conferences, partnered in many projects, and even provided well-publicized endorsement for one another’s ministry. For instance, MacArthur was annually giving speeches during the conferences of Sproul’s Ligonier Ministries, and Sproul was joining MacArthur’s Shepherds’ Conference.
It also portrayed that Christian leaders can have a strong friendship and earn each other’s respect even though they may not agree on some issues that are not key. Sola scriptura was dear to both men, and they both had a zeal for teaching the doctrines of grace and thereby strengthening their fellowship.
To this day after Sproul’s death in 2017, MacArthur remains to express the affinity with Sproul confessing Sprouls’ influence on his life and evangelism.
